The question raised is how to be prepared, and how to cope
with the spills. This is always a difficult task, and one will never be
able to provide full protection. |

Thulica AB of Sweden has worked with environmentally
friendly products for years, and has developed a product which has shown
excellent performance in the ability of collecting oil. The product is
made from natural fibres. By its special mesh construction it has two
uniqe properties: ABSORPTION and ADHESION. The amount of oil attatched to
the net is considerable. |
 |
|
Based on official test results carried out by Sintef, Trondheim, Norway, the
mesh will absorb oil with viscosity of 500 cp 3-4 times the specific weight
of the mesh. Experiments with heavy fuel IF 80 at 0 centigrades in the water
showed lower absoring capacity. On the other hand, the adhesion power for
this oil was great, and the test proved that the mesh could retain 4 l/m2.
The test also concluded that the natural fibre mesh was very promising in
collecting bunkers oil, even in cold water. The state of the fibres, wet or
dry, had little or no effect on their ability to absorb/adsorb oil.

Most of today's alternative products are made from
syntetic or chemical materials. They have to be disposed of at special
plants at high costs to avoid dangerous exposures and pollution of the
environment. |
| The natural fibre mesh is enviromentally
friendly, and the oily mesh can be burned onboard or onshore without
having more negative impact than burning the oil itself.
